This is the first and only English translation of celebrated Haitian author Fernand Hibbert's novella Romulus. The story takes place in the prosperous and lively seaside town of Miragoâne on Haiti’s southern peninsula, where a group of exiles disembark to launch a civil war. The town’s residents are forced to take sides as their home is transformed into a battleground. Romulus Joseph, a simple police commissioner, finds himself taking part in the uprising, never fully grasping the philosophy of the rebellion. First published in French and Kreyòl in 1908, Fernand Hibbert’s novella Romulus is an exciting look at a vibrant community as its members live through the thrill and disappointment of one of many disastrous events in Haiti’s rocky history. Hibbert tells this dramatic and satirical tale with as much wit as heart. His themes, both political and emotional, hold true a century after publication.

"M. Robertshaw a fait une traduction remarquable de Romulus, car il a su rendre l’ironie désabusée du romancier, proche parfois de l’humour noir. Il a dû faire un véritable tour de force pour rendre certaines parties du roman où le créole donne au français une couleur toute haïtienne. Le romancier n’aurait pas renié cette version anglaise de son texte.""Mr. Robertshaw has produced a remarkable translation of Romulus, as he was able to capture the disillusioned irony of the novelist, sometimes verging on black humour. A true tour de force was necessary to render certain sections of the novel where the Creole gives the French a wholly Haitian colour. The novelist wouldn't have denied this English version of his text."

Romulus A Novella from 19th Century Haiti Fernand Hibbert Matthew Robertshaw 9780988104891 Books Reviews
What was Haiti like in 1883? What were the political aspirations of its people? How did they live? Fernand Hibbert's novella Romulus, now translated for the first time into English, offers rare glimpses into what was in the late 19th Century the most advanced and sophisticated country in the Caribbean. What is even better, is that the novella is a great read with a cast of colorful and likeable characters and a plot that keeps you in suspense from start to finish..
